The work of the German born photographer Jan Ebeling focuses on the merits and shortfalls of contemporary portraiture, in particular the relationship between the photographer, the camera and the subject. His most recent work Fillip which was produced in close collaboration with the Goethe Institute, penetrates the notion of identity during adolecense in conjunction with sport and group dynamics. Earlier works like his under water series Transition have a more conceptual approach to photography. It is an attempt to visualize a metaphysical voyage; Descending into a hyper-reality of non-communication and physical non-existence. After weight has been left behind, a pergutry stage of self has been entered.
