Valentine Schmidt ![]() |
Schmidt's major body of work, Plunge, is a set of semi-abstract images documenting Four London Lidos during winter months. Her fascination by these, sometimes derelict spaces and her experience of the physical pain and exhilaration of swimming for long distances and in very cold water led to a series of portraits of swimmers stepping from the sea immediately after an eight-mile swim (Eight miles). Later she returned to her fascination with peoples relationship to water with minus 7; photographing swimmers as they step from the frozen sea, as twilight becomes night in the northern light of Finland, Most recently Valentine explored boy divers' aspiration and vulnerability in a series set on the highest diving board at Crystal Palace Sports Centre (Elevate). Plunge and Elevate are represented by The Photographers' Gallery's Print Sales Gallery. |
